The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) has been frantically looking for a new garbage dumping site in the port town, ever since garbage began overflowing on the public road outside the existing dumping site at Sada.
The issue has been highlighted after residents of Sada raised a stink over haphazard dumping of garbage.
After being hit by unbearable stench due to a huge garbage pile on the road, angry residents of Sada visited the site on Friday morning.
They claimed to have seen MMC trucks, compactors and even a navy truck offloading garbage on the road outside the dumping site, as there was no scope to even enter the site with garbage taking up every inch of space in the site.
As photos of garbage being dumped on roads were circulated on social media, an MMC team comprising Chairperson Bhavna Nanoskar and councillors inspected the area and assured to act swiftly on the issue.
They promised to get garbage cleared from the road and also invite those dumping garbage on the roads for a discussion to resolve the issue.
The MMC also decided to find a new land to dump garbage after angry residents raised their voice against the MMC and the panel of councillors visiting the site.
Agitated residents finally gave the MMC an eight-day ultimatum to resolve the problem, failing which they have decided to block all garbage carrying vehicles (including MMC and Navy) and send them back without allowing them to dump garbage in the area.
Sada-based social activist Xencor Polgi said residents had faced the issue for the last many years as the existing plant was not working and the proposed new setup was yet to see the light of the day.
“The MMC is useless, but it was shocking to see a naval truck brazenly dumping garbage on the road in front of us. They are supposed to be disciplined forces and have stickers of Swacchata Bharat Abhiyan on all their vehicles, but sadly they don’t follow it themselves.”
“We have been informed that they dump garbage on a daily basis as the navy pays some monthly amount to the MMC towards garbage disposal. When the MMC itself is struggling for space, it should have instead referred the Navy to the Saligao treatment plant,” said Polgi.
Plans to shift dump site: MMC CO
VASCO: The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes said there were discussions to identify a new garbage dumping site and to shift the existing site outside Sada.
Fernandes also informed that the contractor was directed to begin work to clear the overflowing garbage immediately.
“We are already taking up the discussion to shift the dump site from Sada to somewhere away near the suburbs, but the process is long and will need time. Due to monsoons, the work had stopped.”
“Our JCB also had some problems but it has been resolved and the contractor has been directed to begin work on clearing the garbage from Friday itself,” said Fernandes.
