Fisherwomen from the Vasco fish market have decided to shut down the Vasco fish market for a day on September 26 to attend the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) meeting, in a bid to resolve the issue of migrants and vendors selling fish outside the Vasco fish market.

On Friday morning, tempers flared up when enraged fisherwomen from the Vasco fish market drove away a large number of migrants selling fish near the KTC shuttle bus stop and also confronted some stall owners selling fish to restaurants, bars and hotels.

Aggrieved fisherwomen later marched to the MMC office and met the chief officer, requesting him to take strict action on vendors and migrants selling fish outside the market.

Fisherwomen also informed that they had won a legal battle in the Directorate of Municipal Administration (DMA) against stalls selling fish outside the Vasco fish market, who had earlier challenged MMC’s order preventing fish sale outside the Vasco fish market.

Though MMC Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes said he had not seen the order, he assured to offer all help to the aggrieved fisherwomen and said MMC would take action against those selling fish on roadsides.

The agitated fisherwomen have decide to attend the council meeting in large numbers to bring their grievances to the notice of MMC and force them to come up with a permanent solution to stop fish sales outside the Vasco fish market.
