Bowing to locals’ sentiments, the panchayat body which was chaired by deputy sarpanch Cruz Mariano Pereira resolved to write to Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, TCP Minister Vijai Sardesai, the Chief Secretary and IDC demanding the exact location of the plant and the need to take the panchayat body into
confidence.
At the meet held on Sunday, locals were steadfast in their opposition to the proposed garbage treatment plant planned at Verna industrial estate. They urged the panchayat body to ascertain the exact location of this plant. “In case this plant is planned in Verna industrial estate, we oppose it,” they told the panchayat body.
Locals claimed the existence of natural wealth in the form of trees, etc, at the place of the planned plant, besides the existence of houses. “All these will be affected,” they added.
According to some locals, the panchayat body had earlier adopted a resolution rejecting the plant at this location. The locals demanded that the panchayat body refer to this very resolution and write to the authorities concerned drawing the attention of the latter to the objection of the locals
on record.
The matter pertaining to the sopo auction also came up for discussion at the gram sabha. The panchayat body resolved to conduct re-auction of the sopo before the Model Code of Conduct for panchayat polls comes into force ahead of the panchayat elections.
At the outset, the panchayat body passed the budget which has an expenditure component of `1 crore, 55 lakhs,
