PORVORIM

Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte, Saligao MLA Jayesh Salgaonkar and a number of locals from Porvorim and Reis Magos on Monday marched towards the office of PWD Assistant Engineer Public Works (water division) and protested against the water problems that have dogged the areas since the last five days.

Khaunte complained to PWD Principal Chief Engineer Uttam Parsekar, Chief Engineer Santosh Mhapne, Executive Engineer Nitin Neverekar and Assistant Engineer Deepak Borkar that residents of Porvorim and Saligao constituencies have been facing water shortage since the last four days.

“On the fifth day, PWD released some muddy water and that too, for a few areas of Porvorim constituency. Water has been released to the Secretariat, Water Resource Department, High Court, Parra, Mapusa, Aldona and Tivim, but not to Porvorim and Saligao constituencies. This is totally unfair.”

“The overhead water tanks at O’Coqueiro circle, Torda and JMJ hospital are completely dry and this indicates that water has not been released to these areas. When residents call up the PWD Water Cell, they don’t get a proper reply. If they visit the PWD office, the officers are not found in their places and this is ridiculous.”

“When people checked the water register kept at the water tank near O’Coqueiro circle, they observed that several water tankers are being dispatched to starred hotels in Calangute every day, which means Porvorim has received sufficient water from Assnora. We need to know why water is not being supplied to residents of Porvorim these days,” asked a visibly upset Khaunte.

Later, PWD Deepak Pauskar went to the site and held talks with Khaunte and Salgaonkar.

Khaunte explained the entire situation to him and demanded the transfer of PWD Assistant Engineer Deepak Borkar, alleging that he is unable to handle the water problem of Porvorim.

Khaunte also demanded a criminal complaint should be filed by PWD against the contractor who has created the mess about the repair of the 1000 mm water pipeline.

“If this is not done, I will file a complaint against the contractor. We also demand that water be immediately supplied to residents of Porvorim and Saligao constituencies,” said Khaunte.
