Irked over the inordinate delay by the PWD in undertaking the repair work of a damaged portion of the road in the hilly area of Salgini ward of Netravali, locals on Monday began the repair work by themselves.
The villagers decided to repair the road on their own in order to make the road motorable for motorists given the annual Mahashivratri celebrations at the village temple on Wednesday.
The Salgini ward of Neturlim village is situated on the top of hillock and is on the Goa’s border with Karnataka.
At the last Lok Sabha elections, Salgini had been in news for being one among the very few villages in Goa to achieve a 100 per cent voter turnout. Unhappy villagers from Salgini have now wondered what they have achieved after having voted cent per cent.
The road to Salgini village was reportedly constructed about a decade ago and had worn out over the years with black topping of the tarred road having disappeared. The exposed gravel had made it dangerous for vehicles on the road, particularly at the numerous turns along the village road.
Villagers informed that they had recently met Social Welfare Minister and Sanguem MLA Subhash Phal Dessai over the road work and he had assured in getting the work done soon. He had even contacted PWD authorities in the matter. The villagers claimed that the procedures by the PWD would take time in executing the repair work.
However with the annual Mahashivratri celebrations barely a day away, the village elders took the initiative of getting the repair work done by removing the loose gravel from the road and filling the many potholes with mud.
The annual Mahashivratri celebrations at the village temple is a major event in the area as locals from nearby villages flock to the village temple to partake in the celebrations.
