The PWD contractor, who had deployed heavy machinery to clear the wild plants and make way for a road to the property, had to stop work after the residents raised the dispute over the ownership. Though the work was being carried out under police protection, the contractor along with Matin Carol, the petitioner before the National Minority Commission, preferred to call off the work.
Matin later told The Goan that he has brought to the notice of the Sub-divisional magistrate, Margao how work at the kabrastan construction site was disrupted by some persons. “The land in question, which has been acquired by the Margao Municipal Council, falls in the jurisdiction of the Municipality. Part of the property belongs to a private owner, while the rest belongs to the Communidade. I have explained to the people that the land does not belong to any Fabrica”, Matin said.
He said that given that the project has all the permissions, he has asked the authorities to get the work resumed, adding that the forest officials will also visit the site in the future.
Meanwhile, activist Felix Dias told the media at the site that the residents are of the opinion that the land in question belongs to a private party. He also demanded to know how the government and
the TCP has given the permission to develop the land for the kabrastan when it has a steep gradient.
