MARGAO
The Margao Station Road witnessed dramatic scenes late on Thursday night after alert residents of Malbhat and tourist taxi operators caught a gang allegedly involved in robbing passengers alighting at the Margao railway station.
After nabbing five members of the gang, the locals allegedly discovered that the stolen mobile phones were being passed on to staff manning the public toilets operated by a private agency.
Interestingly, while the residents managed to apprehend five suspects on their own, the police are believed to have arrived at the spot nearly an hour later, sources said.
Agitated residents gathered at the toilet block on Friday and demanded that the agency remove the personnel deployed there.
The residents expressed concern that local women would be unsafe if the alleged gang members continued to frequent the toilet block.
During discussions with the agency’s representatives, the residents also demanded that CCTV cameras be installed in and around the toilet block to enhance security.
