The Commercial capital on Thursday witnessed less movement of people in the city markets, including the fish market.
In another development, though the South Goa district Collector has allowed Municipal markets to open but on condition that it complies with the social distancing norms, Margao’s New Market traders have said individual traders will take a call whether to keep the shops open or not during the lockdown.
In fact, a visit to the SGPDA retail fish market revealed that hardly any customers visited the market on Thursday. Fish vendors pointed out that they did not make any business on Thursday even though many had expected fish-loving Goans to throng the market for purchases ahead of the lockdown.
Similar sentiments were echoed by President of New Market Traders Association Vinod Shirodkar.
Compared to Wednesday, when people came out in large numbers for shopping moments after Chief Minister Pramod Sawant’s announcement about the lockdown starting Thursday evening, Shirodkar said hardly any people were seen in the markets on Thursday.
On the functioning of the new market, Shirodkar said individual traders will decide whether to keep their establishments open or not in view of the daily spike in Covid cases.
“The Collector has allowed municipal markets to remain open, but we have left it for the individual traders to take a decision on keeping their establishments open”, said the President of New Market Traders Association.
