The Mormugao BJP Block has said plans are afoot to have a statue of martyr Lt Narendra Mayekar at Sada.
This was announced by Mormugao BJP Block President Sanjay Satardekar, a trusted aide of Mormugao MLA Milind Naik at the 18th death anniversary programme of Lt Mayekar held at the Narendra Mayekar Smarak in Headland Sada.
Lt Mayekar laid down his life fighting armed ULFA militants holed in a hideout in Assam in early 2000.
The programme was conducted in association with Veteran Soldiers Welfare Association (VSWA).
Speaking to the media, Satardekar said the Smarak was built in Headland
Sada to commemorate Mayekar’s sacrifice of his life for the nation.
“Soon a statue of his will be installed here and this is an idea of our MLA Milind Naik. We want to spread the message of patriotism,” said Satardekar.
Speaking on the occasion, VSWA President Surjit Singh Khalsa, who had also
participated in the Bangladesh liberation war in 1971, said it was a great initiative that martyrs were being remembered.
“We will soon approach schools to spread the message about martyrdom and try and see if a lesson of the sacrifice can be included in school books,” said Khalsa.
