Navelim MLA Luizinho Faleiro joined his Benaulim counterpart Churchill Alemao on Saturday to give a call to the people of Navelim and Varca to join hands in the war against drugs.
Both Luizinho and Churchill expressed concern over the drugs menace at the Telaulim-Varca bridge over river Sal, with the duo making a fervent plea to the people on both sides of the river to join hands to save the younger generation from drugs.
The duo made an appeal to the Margao police and their Colva counterparts to h
elp the villagers clamp down on the drugs menace with a heavy hand. "Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar is on record that his government will never compromise on drugs but will come down heavily on drug peddlers. I hope and expect the police at Colva and Margao to join the battle and put an end to drugs at the Telaulim-Varca bridge," Churchill said.
The duo took the platform at the commissioning of illumination of the Telaulim-Varca bridge with LED lights on Saturday to highlight the drug menace and seeking cooperation of the citizens as well as the police to curb the menace.
In his brief address, Faleiro said, "Taking advantage of darkness on the Telaulim-Varca bridge, youths in groups consume drugs. The bridge has been illuminated today, but the war against drugs has just begun," Faleiro said while seeking cooperation of the people and the police to curb the menace.
"We do not know the background of this group of youth. But these youngsters should be saved from drugs. This anti-drugs movement has the support of the two MLAs as well as the Telaulim Chaplain Fr Estaquio Abrew. Let us all join hands against drugs," Faleiro appealed.
The Navelim MLA requested Margao police station in-charge, PI Kapil Nayak, to intensify night patrolling at the bridge and also clamp down against anti-social activities, while Churchill said the bridge and the approach road should be declared as no-parking zones to keep anti-social elements at bay.
