Macazana villagers on Sunday have called for an immediate stop to the illegal mining of sand in river Zuari.
At the gram Sabha on Sunday chaired by Sarpanch Agnelo D’Costa, agitated gram sabha members drew attention of the Chair to the illegal sand mining taking place in the village by outsiders posing danger to the village bundhs.
They pointed that people from the other side of the river have been found involved in sand mining, while calling for an immediate stop to the illegal activity.
After much discussion, the gram sabha later resolved to ask the panchayat body to dash off complaints to the Captain of Ports, River Navigation Department and the District Collector, South to intervene and stop the illegal activity.
Sarpanch Agnelo told The Goan that the villagers were upset that the sand mining might leave the village bundhs damaged by the illegal activity.
“The members have claimed that some people from Panchwadi and Curtorim are involved in the illegal activity and demanded a stop to the same forthwith,” he said, adding that the panchayat would immediately dispatch letters to the District Collector, South, besides the Captain of Ports and the RND to immediately stop the activity.
The meeting also deliberated on the mobile tower, with members demanding to know the delay in its installation despite permission granted by the body.
The Sarpanch informed the members that the mobile company has to comply with the laid down process, adding that it may take around three months for the tower to
take shape.
