The controversy surrounding Sonali Phogat’s murder has once again stirred serious discussion around drugs syndicate linked with the suppliers and consumers. In the coastal State that has already sullied its image as one of the major hubs for drug menace, 'obnoxious chemicals' is the latest entrant.
The Goan has reliably learnt that these forms of drugs, medically known as 'designer drugs’ are manufactured in Goa. The ingredients, precisely chemicals required to produce this variety are sourced from countries such as Russia and Australia.
The modus operandi to smuggle its contents is startling. “The traditional way to smuggle drugs into a country is done away with. Specific contents used to produce designer drugs are easily moulded in various shapes. The crockery sets or artefacts flown into India along with the baggage are in fact substances to manufacture these drugs," a credible source told The Goan.
These articles, laced with paints or acrylic colours to evade the eyes of the law, are then rinsed to get the actual product. But some chemical particles are glued which are ignored by the ‘chemists’ who thereafter blend it with the main ingredients to manufacture the new form of party drugs. “The outcome is dangerous. Unlike other party drugs familiar in the market, designer drugs can kill a person instantly,” the source said.
Despite grievous consequences, its smuggling has reportedly been rampant in the recent past for distribution in the coastal belt and among youngsters.
“Until a little over one decade, drug overdose deaths were almost non-existent. It started with increasing nightlife and beachside parties, which attracts tourists to Goa,” stated the source.
Reliable information with The Goan also mentions that drug cartels in Goa hire these 'foreign chemists' as they are well-versed with the composition of the drugs. “The network is vast and not restricted to interstate gangs,” the source added.
Sonali Phogat, a BJP leader and an actress, fell prey to the nexus and while she succumbed to overdose, her untimely death has racked up the issue of the drugs menace.
