The Maina area of Curtorim village witnessed an uproar over an inspection of a housing project ordered by the Salcete Block Development Office.
As the BDO deputed an Extension Officer from the office to conduct the inspection, agitated residents questioned why a technical officer, such as an engineer, was not sent to assess the site.
The residents demanded the immediate removal of the GI sheet fencing around the housing project site, stating that it posed a danger to motorists and pedestrians.
Congress leader and Maina resident Moreno Rebello said the issue had been pending for months despite local residents waging a sustained battle to scrap the project. He questioned what purpose an inspection by an Extension Officer would serve when residents were demanding the dismantling of the fencing.
“As work on the project has been halted and the matter is pending before the authorities, the people of Maina demand the immediate removal of the fencing in the interest of the local populace,” Moreno said.
Residents also questioned newly elected Curtorim Sarpanch Milagres Rodrigues over the status of the project and demanded action against it. The sarpanch replied that the project was opposed not only by the Gram Sabha but also by the panchayat.
The sarpanch, however, faced questions over why the fencing erected by the builder had not been removed till date.
Moreno later told the media that the people of Maina would not rest until the panchayat authorities scrapped the project and dismantled the fencing.
