A major fire broke out at the Kadamba Transport Corporation terminus at Panaji in the early hours of Monday reducing to ashes a supermarket located on the ground floor and the office of Assistant Director of Transport (North), housed on the first floor.
Around 10 to 12 fire tenders were deployed at the spot to douse the flames. It took the fire services well over there hours to bring the blaze under control. By evening, the floor of KTC premises was flooded with water and a thick shroud of smoke and noxious fumes hung about the blackened premises well into the night.
While no casualties were reported in the unfortunate incident, the cumulative loss suffered by various commercial and government establishments are expected to cross Rs one crore.
Offering details about the fire which broke out at the KTC-owned premises, KTC managing director Derrick Pereira Neto stated, "At 5.45 am, when a private bus driver drove into the stand, he saw the fumes emanating from the roof of the KTC stand. He informed the KTC traffic-in-charge, who in
RTO office shut
for 3 days
PANAJI: Transport Director Nikhil Dessai has said that the RTO office gutted in the fire at KTC premises in Panaji will remain shut for two to three days. "Assessment of damages is being undertaken. Enforcement office has been damaged severely. One fourth of the records at the registration office have also been affected. Old records are burnt out. Fortunately, we had migrated most of the records to online. That will save us some trouble. We may need to shut down for two to three days to return to normalcy," he stated.
Parrikar takes stock
PANAJI: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar paid a visit to the KTC bus stand to take stock of the situation along with North Goa Collector Neela Mohanan and Transport Director Dessai. Parrikar has asked bureaucrats to issue notices to the proprietor of the supermarket while also advising that all the necessary measures be adopted before the supermarket is allowed to throw open its doors to customers again.
