Residents of Keri-Sattari have threatened to block the Goa-Belagavi highway at Keri, if authorities fail to improve the quality of potable water in the village.
Issues of BPL families being deprived of benefits and poor quality of potable water dominated the special Keri gram sabha convened to constitute the Biodiversity Management Committee (BMC) on Monday.
Laxman Majik, Sitaram Gawas and other residents raised the BPL issue and hit out at the panchayat for failing to give serious attention to the issue, as many BPL families are being deprived of benefits.
Sitaram Gawas said many families included in the BPL list released by the Social Welfare Department were not getting benefits.
In his reply, Sarpanch Laxman Gawas said the panchayat would seriously look into the matter and assured that all benefits would be given to the affected families.
The poor quality of potable water was also discussed.
Sarpanch Gawas and others said there was a long-pending demand from locals for a water filtration system at the Keri water treatment plant.
Locals complained that since the last four months, people have been supplied muddy water and feared it could cause health problems in the village.
The residents demanded that the panchayat takes a serious note of the water issue, failing which they threatened to block the Goa-Belagavi highway at Keri-Sattari.
