Colva police have arrested a man for allegedly inflicting burn injuries on a three-and-a-half-year-old girl using a lit candle.
The incident is believed to have occurred when the child, who hails from Davorlim, was reportedly invited to play with the accused’s child at Colva. As the victim’s mother works overseas, the girl has been living with her extended family.
The accused allegedly inflicted the burn injuries after finding that the child had soiled the living area.
The incident came to light after an NGO lodged a complaint with the Colva police.
Margao Sub-Divisional Police Officer SP Gurudas Kadam told the media that the accused had also been booked under the POCSO Act for alleged sexual assault, as he had reportedly removed the child’s undergarment. He said the accused had been remanded to four days of police custody.
