A 44-year-old man on Wednesday morning committed suicide by jumping off the terrace of a building at Down Mangor.
While the incident shocked the residents, a Mormugao councillor and some residents complained about an inordinate delay in the 108 ambulance reaching the spot.
Vasco PI Kapil Nayak said the incident occurred at around 7.30 am. “The deceased, Basvraj Negimani, jumped from the terrace of the building. He was staying at a neighbouring building along with his wife and two children. Enquiry revealed that he was an alcoholic and was unstable for the last two days.”
“There is no foul play and we have registered a case of unnatural death under Section 174 CrPC,” said PI Nayak.
Speaking to reporters, the Councillor Girish Borker and some residents said the person, Basappa Negimani, was alive after he jumped and could have possibly been saved had the ambulance arrived on time.
“I was startled by the sound of a huge thud and I came to check to see if a coconut palm had fallen but I saw that our neighbour was lying on the floor, but not dead,” said a neighbour Rocky D’Souza.
“When we saw him still alive, we started calling the 108 ambulance but no one was answering the calls. His family members came down and many others also tried to call the 108 ambulance but there was no response,” said D’Souza.
Added another neighbour Manuel Fernandes,“Finally, someone from 108 answered and said the ambulance from Vasco was busy and they would send the ambulance from Cansaulim.”
