Man loses Rs 3.25 lakh in fake gas bill update scam

Fatorda police have registered an FIR against unknown persons for allegedly cheating a resident of Chandrawado-Fatorda and causing a wrongful financial loss of Rs 3.25 lakh.

In his complaint, Ashraf Kadir Naik, a resident of Chandrawado-Fatorda and originally from Tagore Nagar, Vikhroli West, Mumbai, Maharashtra, stated that between May 29 and June 5, 2026, an unknown person contacted him over the phone on the pretext of updating his gas bill.

He alleged that the accused dishonestly induced him to install a malicious file named “Mahanagar Gas Bill Update App”. Upon installation, the accused gained unauthorised access to the complainant’s mobile phone and fraudulently carried out four unauthorised UPI transactions from his Canara Bank account, thereby cheating him and causing a financial loss of Rs 3,25,490.

A case under Section 318(4) of the BNS has been registered against the unknown accused.
