A man committed suicide after first killing his partner in the coastal village of Anjuna, police said.
The accused, Durgesh Mahanto (33), a native of Nepal first murdered his live-in partner Lekhi Chetri (36) from Assam and later committed suicide by hanging in a rented room at Kumbar-vaddo, Anjuna on Saturday night.
According to police there were frequent quarrels between the two and on Saturday evening both reached the Anjuna Police Station with another domestic dispute.
After arriving at a compromise, however, the couple patched up and left the police station at around 5 pm, police said. The woman was working at a beauty parlour, while the man was unemployed and used to constantly borrow money from his partner.
The incident came to light on Sunday morning at around 11 am when the owner, noticing that none of the tenants had come out of the room, peeped into the room through a gap in the door only to find the man’s body hanging.
He informed the police who immediately rushed to the site and broke open the front door.
While the man was found hanging from the ceiling, the woman was found dead on the bed. Some pillows where lying by her side clearly indicating that the man must have first smothered his partner to death and then committed suicide, police said.
Police conducted inquest panchanama and sent both the bodies for post mortem.
PSI Amir Taral is conducting further inquiry.
