MPT has covered the potash cargo stored at Kharewado with tarpaulin as a safety measure, providing immediate relief to the labourers and members of Goa Boat Owners Association, who, on Friday, had a verbal spat with staff of stevedores handling potash at the Kharewado storage plot.
Putting more light on this move, MPT Sr Dy Traffic Manager, Jerome Clement, said the port was working on the feasibility of converting the Kharewado plot into a container handling yard.
“Since the plot is very close to the habitat, we have decided not to store dry bulk cargo there. We are also planning a massive big tree plantation drive in the plot and will also put windshield so that the cargo stored there does not fly and cause pollution to the Kharewado jetty and the city. In the long term we are also trying to see the feasibility of converting this plot into a container yard so that
clean cargo is handled there,” said Clement.
It may be recalled that members of GBOA had a heated argument with stevedores handling potash cargo after the powder flew and mixed
up with the food of GBOA boat labourers.
MPT had then immediately instructed the stevedore to stop unloading cargo during heavy winds and also directed for immediate covering of
the cargo as a preventive measure.
