 MARGAO

A 108 Ambulance rushed to attend a senior citizen staying close to the Sonsodo dump yard late Friday evening, even as Chief Minister Pramod Sawant’s high-level meeting in Panaji earlier in the day had an effect at Sonsodo with senior officials and contractors descending on the site to tackle the fire head-on.

While reports spoke about people from the Maina area complaining of health issues, a 108 ambulance rushed to the housing colony adjoining Sonsodo after a senior citizen complained of health problems.

This is the first time that an ambulance with doctors made its presence felt in the immediate neighbourhood of Sonsodo to attend to a call for medical assistance.

Meanwhile, District Collector Ajit Roy, who has been appointed as the nodal officer by the Chief Minister for the Sonsodo operation, Additional Collector Agnelo Fernandes, Director of Municipal Administration Dr Tariq Thomas, officials of the fire services, besides a road contractor all descended on Sonsodo to launch a coordinated

action to cap the fire in a day or two.

That the road contractor, building the Western bypass, was present at the site assumes significance given that the administration has finally decided to cap the fire with mud and water.

Margao Municipal Council Chief Officer Sidhivinayak Naik, Chairperson Babita Angle Prabhudesai and other municipal officials were all on the ground to monitor the situation.

Earlier in the evening, a naval helicopter hovered over the Sonsodo site, with officials trying to figure out whether the copter did a sortie to find out the extent of fire and smoke at the site.
