A video clip of a man smashing a car with a hammer at a busy stretch of the highway at Porvorim in broad daylight on Saturday went viral on social media, prompting sharp reactions from netizens.
Porvorim police later took the person into custody and sent him to the Goa Medical College (GMC), as he was suspected to have been mentally unstable.
According to reports, the accused, Shekhar Kavlekar from Pilerne, got off his two-wheeler at the traffic signal near O’Coqueiro and went towards the car, owned by Manuel Fernandes of Candolim, and began smashing it on all sides with a hammer.
In a police complaint, Fernandes said the damage to his vehicle was estimated at Rs 1 lakh.
Police rushed to the spot and took Kavlekar into custody.
Suspecting him to be mentally unsound, police took the accused the GMC at Bambolim and registered the incident as a Non-Cognisible offence. Police Sub“Inspector Pranita Manjrekar is investigating the case.
