Mandrem locals up in arms over motorised paragliding sound

Residents of Mandrem have complained about the annoying sound of motorised paragliding activity throughout the day in Mandrem.

PERNEM

It may be recalled that some days back, Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar had launched motorised paragliding adventure, an initiative of the GTDC, at Mandrem beach.
A villager, Sujay Naik said they don’t have any problem with government’s initiative for tourists. “But we strongly oppose sound pollution in our area, as it disturbs peace of the local people,”
added Naik.
Another villager, Pravin Gaonkar said motorised paragliding hovers in the local areas instead of moving over the beach. “It flies at low altitude, due to which our peace is disturbed. Small children are also afraid of the annoying noise of motorised paragliding,” he added.
Sandesh Sawant said the issue should be discussed in Mandrem gram sabha on November 27. Mandrem Congress Block general secretary Amit Sawant accused the chief minister of implementing projects without taking the locals into confidence. “No department or civic body has given permission to the motorised paragliding adventure at Mandrem beach,” claimed Sawant.
When contacted, GTDC Chairman Nilesh Cabral said GTDC has given all permissions for paragliding adventure. “If paragliding creates disturbance in the local areas, I will surely look into the matter,” added Cabral.
When contacted, Mandrem Sarpanch Vaishalli Shetgaonkar said GTDC had applied for permission for paragliding adventure by obtaining NOC from departments concerned.
