The Mapusa police have registered a case against two unidentified individuals for allegedly stealing a Mangalsutra worth Rs 2 lakhs from a vegetable vendor in Nachinola on Sunday afternoon.
The victim, Gayatri Shirodkar (43), a resident of Nachinola, lodged a complaint stating that the theft occurred around 2 pm near the Arch of Rawalghadi Temple, where she was selling vegetables.
According to the police, two men arrived on a two-wheeler and approached Shirodkar, offering a donation in an attempt to lure her.
The suspects asked Shirodkar to remove her Mangalsutra with a pendant and place it in a plastic bag.
They then distracted her and cleverly replaced the bag with an identical one, escaping with the valuable necklace. Shirodkar realized the theft after the suspects had fled and immediately raised an alarm.
CCTV footage of the incident has been reviewed and handed over to the police for further investigation.
An offence has been registered under Section 303 (2) R/w 3(5) BNS, 2023.
Mapusa police are conducting further inquiries to trace the suspects.
