MAPUSA
Amidst high drama, the Mapusa civic body which went to demolish an illegal structure had to stop mid-way after the owner managed to get a stay from the High Court against the demolition.
However, the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) managed to seize all the goods and furniture from the shop.
MMC Chief Officer Chandrakant Shetkar along with the municipal staff descended near the Jeevan Cold Drink shop on Monday morning and began to remove the goods from inside the shop.
High drama ensued at the site with the owner throwing tantrums and trying to obstruct the demolition drive.
The owner also prostrated inside the shop to stop/delay the demolition.
Finally, just when the JCB was about to knock one side of the structure, the owner’s lawyer rushed in with the High Court order granting stay on the demolition.
According to the chief officer, the civic body had followed the procedure which finally culminated with the demolition.
He said all the goods were removed from the shop and just when the civic body was about to bring down the structure the owner brought the court order granting stay on the demolition.
The owner, S Mayenkar, slammed the civic body for being biased and failing to inform him of the demolition. He also blamed the developer Prabhu Moni who had filed a case against him.
Sources in the municipal council said that Mayenkar was already given another premises in place of the structure.
“The owner latched on to this illegal structure even after getting a new shop in its place,” the source informed.
