Vasco police on Monday arrested three persons on charges of stealing materials worth Rs 12.5 lakh from the PWD store room at Sada-Vasco.
Vasco PI Kapil Nayak said that the burglary had been detected as police were investigating a separate burglary at Dabolim.
“Some culprits had stolen antique materials worth Rs 3 lakh from a company shed at Dabolim and we had registered a crime at Vasco police station under Sections 384, 454 IPC,” said PI Nayak.
“During investigations, our staff and LIB staff found some persons moving suspiciously near the Jogger’s Park at Chicalim and we questioned them but did not find satisfactory answers. We took them in custody in connection with the crime that we had registered.”
PI Nayak said the suspects claimed they had nothing to do with the burglary at Dabolim but disclosed about another crime at the PWD quarters in Sada.
“They confessed having stolen some water supply fittings from the PWD storeroom and kept these stolen items at a scrapyard in Birla, Zuarinagar. We raided the scrapyard and found the stolen items at the scrapyard. We managed to recover all the stolen items worth Rs 12.5 lakh and arrested three persons, the scrapyard owner Nagu Golar (50), Onba Rathod (40) and Aparna Rathod (40) under Section 41 CrPC,” said PI Nayak.
“We also confirmed the facts from the Assistant Engineer of the PWD. The PWD had already registered a complaint in this regards at the Mormugao police station and we will hand over these culprits and the recovered property to the Mormugao police station for further investigation,” said Nayak.
A PWD official Yeshwant Naik said the materials were used during break down and were stored in a room at the PWD Quarters at Sada.
“These items were placed at the Sada Store and when we sent our person to get these materials, we realised that the shutter of the store had been damaged. Our items had gone missing and we are glad that the stolen materials have been recovered.”
“These items are required for pipelines during breakdown and we immediately registered our complaint at Mormugao Police station. The burglary had come to light on August 24 when we had gone to get these items from the store and we assume that this crime may have occurred two days prior,” said Naik.
