Mapusa civic body initiates steps to declare city ODF

Initiating steps to declare Mapusa open defecation free within the deadline set by the State government, the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) has called for feedback and objections from the general public by August 29.  

Of the 20 wards, the MMC had already declared eight wards “ 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 11 and 19 open defecation free in its ordinary meeting held on January 31, 2018. 

The council in its ordinary meeting on June 14 this year decided to identify areas where public/community and mobile toilets were needed or existing toilets needed to be repaired in order to declare the remaining 12 wards ODF.  

“Public are requested for feedback/objections on declaration of 12 wards “ 1, 2, 8, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 

18 and 20 “ as the open defecation free status may be communicated to this office by August 29,” said Clen Madeira, chief officer, MMC in a corrigendum notice issued in a local daily on Thursday.  

Meanwhile, Mapusa Municipal Council Chairperson Ryan Braganza has informed that the council has ordered for 197 bio-toilets which will be set up at various places in the municipal jurisdiction. 

“Most of the toilets will be installed in houses belonging to individuals. Around 30 units will be used as community toilets,” Braganza said.  

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant in the recent assembly has declared that Goa will be declared ODF by August 31.
