In order to avoid traffic congestion and inconvenience to commuters during the Ganesh Chaturthi festival, Deputy Collector Gurudas Desai directed the Mapusa civic body to explore the option of providing parking for vehicles in the open space behind the new KTC bus-stand adjacent to the Mapusa sub-yard.
Desai on Friday also urged the authorities and the Sarvajanik Ganesh organisers to create awareness among the youngsters not to burst firecrackers, particularly the loud ‘bombs’ (dada bombs) in populated areas.
“Devotees should park their vehicles at the designated parking areas. The Mapusa Municipal Council must make parking arrangements in the open area behind the new KTC bus-stand to avoid traffic congestion in the main market,” Desai said.
He also suggested to the civic body to identify other parking areas around the market for two-wheeler parking.
The deputy collector issued a series of instructions to hold an incident-free Chaturthi festival in Bardez during a meeting held with all department officials and members of several sarvajanik mandals in his office.
The deputy collector urged the officials and members of sarvajanik mandals to create awareness among the public not to allow bursting of loud firecrackers, particularly the ‘bombs’ in populated areas.
“Bursting of loud firecrackers is a social problem and awareness is key. Parents should create awareness among children so that they do not throw the bombs for sake of fun because it creates a lot of problems particularly to the elderly and the animals,” Desai said.
Mapusa Fire Station in-charge, Srikrishna Parrikar suggested that no sale of firecrackers or explosives should be allowed inside the main market.
He further said that the firecracker stalls may be allowed outside the market area provided they adhere to the guidelines of the fire department.
