Mapusa Council cracks down on open waste dumping

MAPUSA

In a stringent move to curb illegal waste disposal, the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) launched a surprise drive on Wednesday, imposing fines on individuals caught dumping garbage in open areas.

The enforcement action, which began early in the morning, resulted in penalties for around 20 violators across different locations, including Verla-Canca, Khorlim-Ximer, and the vicinity of the North Goa District Hospital.

A team comprising municipal staff, officials from the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB), and police personnel was deployed at various spots to conduct the drive.

MMC Chairperson Priya Mishal emphasised the need for discipline in waste management, urging residents to follow the existing waste collection systems.

“We will continue carrying out such surprise drives to ensure compliance. Dumping waste in the open is an offence, and we request people to dispose of garbage responsibly,” Mishal stated.

The Mapusa civic body has been grappling with the challenge of illegal waste dumping, particularly in identified black spots across the town. To address the issue, the municipal council has adopted a two-pronged strategy”raising public awareness while simultaneously penalising offenders.

Authorities have reiterated their commitment to maintaining cleanliness and warned of strict action against those violating waste disposal regulations.
