The Mapusa civic body has given in-principle nod to set up a 10-tonne capacity garbage treatment plant to treat wet waste in Cunchelim in the suburbs of Mapusa city.
“The plan is to install two units of 5 TPD bio-methanation plants in the acquired land at Cunchelim which is in possession of the council,” said Ryan Braganza, Chairperson of Mapusa Municipal Council at the ordinary council meeting.
He informed that the council was generating 15 TPD of wet waste and the same was being treated at composting units set up at various locations within the jurisdiction of the council and at the solid waste management site at Assagao plateau.
“In order to treat the wet waste in a scientific manner, there is a need to install two units of 5 TDP bio-methanation plants and also to obtain technical sanction based on technical specification prepared by the office of GSUDA,” the chairperson said.
The project cost shall be borne from the 14th Finance Commission grants of Municipal Administration.
Senior councillor, Rohan Kavlekar said that earlier too the council had started the process of setting up a waste treatment plant in Cunchelim which never took off.
“The agency concerned should have given us a presentation about how the plant would be operated,” Kavlekar said.
Senior councillor, Sandeep Falari informed the council that under solid waste management rules every urban local body has to have a treatment plant to treat waste within its jurisdiction.
The Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA) has finalized the technical specifications and has also prepared estimates to set up 5 TPD bio-methanation plants at various urban local bodies.
The decision has been taken to comply with the directions of the National Green Tribunal.
Paying homage to renowned educationist, late Suresh Amonkar, councillor, Tushar Tople suggested naming of the new district library in Mapusa after late Amonkar will be a fitting tribute to the famous son of the soil.
Falari seconded him and said late Amonkar contributed immensely in the field of education and literature and naming the library after him will be most appropriate.
