The North Goa District Hospital in Mapusa will soon get a new morgue with nearly double its present capacity which will be able to preserve at least 20 bodies at a time.
Presently, the morgue in the district hospital has only 12 compartments and at times if some of them are not functioning the capacity reduces further making it difficult for the people who then have to travel all the way to the Goa Medical College and Hospital in Bambolim.
The GSIDC which had built the district hospital will take up the upgradation work of the morgue and increase its capacity to 20.
Newly appointed GSIDC Chairman Michael Lobo said that people from Bardez and Pernem come to the district hospital whenever they lose their near and dear ones and many times they have been deprived the facility of morgue.
“The upgradation of the morgue and increasing the capacity to 20 was the need of the hour. It’s a basic necessity. I have spoken to the chief minister and the health minister and they have agreed to the proposal. We will build a new morgue with the latest technology,” Lobo said.
He said for people from Bardez and Pernem to travel to GMC in Panaji takes nearly two hours due to the current work of elevated corridor.
“To ensure fast service and to bring the facility closer there is need to increase the capacity of the morgue,” he said.
He said this will help people from Bardez, Pernem and even other areas too.
Lobo said GSIDC will also be undertaking roof repair works of the district hospital.
“We are examining how best these works can be fitted into the overall improvement plan for the hospital infrastructure,” he said.
Mapusa MLA, Joshua D’Souza said that he had been constantly raising the issue of the morgue on the floor of the House
“A lot of injustice has been done to people of Bardez and Pernem as due to less capacity of the compartments in the morgue people have been forced to go to GMC,” D’Souza said.
He thanked the GSIDC Chairman Michael Lobo for taking up the issue on priority.
Lobo along with Mapusa MLA, Medical Superintendent Dr Varsha Munj and GSIDC officials conducted an inspection at the district hospital, Mapusa.
