Mapusa lawyers write to CM, call for a 15-day complete lockdown

MAPUSA

Expressing anguish at the spike of Covid cases and failure of the government to control the menace, a group of advocates from Mapusa has called for a complete 15-day lockdown in the State to break the chain.

“We understand economic activities are necessary but not at the cost of the lives of the people. Every single day we are witnessing the death of fellow Goenkars. Many advocates have lost their lives battling Covid, yet our borders are open and the state administration is not inclined to go for a lockdown in the State,” said Adv Shridhar Kamat.

Adv Kamat was among several other lawyers including Adv Anthony (Zito) Braganza, Adv Vilas Patkar and Adv Jerry Santamaria who have made a representation to the chief minister calling for a State-wide lockdown.

Continuing, Adv Kamat said the lockdown was the need of the hour to save lives and bring down the rising Covid graph in the State.

He said the group of lawyers from Mapusa was forced to write to the CM requesting him for a complete lockdown in the interest of Goa and the lives of the people of the State.

“It is rather astonishing and shameful that Goa’s rate of infection is the highest in the country and the death rate is soaring at over 50 persons per day for a population of just about 15 lakhs which is rated as one of the worst in Asia,” he said, in the representation to the CM.

He said other States have sealed their borders and have made Covid tests compulsory for people entering their States.

“The Goa administration has neither sealed the borders nor made the Covid test necessary to enter the State putting the lives of the people at great risk,” he rued.
