MMC garbage truck drivers go on leave

MAPUSA

Mapusa town is expected to start the New Year on a

stinky note.

With 10 vehicle drivers attached to the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) having gone on leave, there is an acute shortage of drivers for the garbage trucks and as a result waste has accumulated at various places in Mapusa town.

According to sources, the MMC has 20 drivers, which include contract drivers. Five drivers have been entrusted to drive the vehicles of the MMC chairperson, chief officer and other municipal vehicles, while 15 drivers have been allotted to drive garbage vehicles. Of these, 10 are on leave since the last two days and there is an acute shortage of drivers for the garbage trucks. As a result, garbage has been left accumulated and people have been left with unbearable stench.

Sources said an official sanctioned leave to these 10 drivers without anticipating the consequences of the absence from work.

When contacted, MMC Chairperson Ryan Braganza said arrangements have been made in their absence. “Drivers have taken leave which is due to them and we cannot deny this to them. We have engaged the remaining drivers on the garbage vehicles,” said Braganza.
