Assuring to make Mapusa garbage-free, Chairperson of Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC), Shubhangi Vaigankar on Monday said the civic body was in the process of outsourcing the work of waste collection to a private entity to ensure effective door-to-door garbage collection and even clearing of black spots in town.Vaigankar also said that various government grants have been utilised to take up development works in different wards of Mapusa.
“We are working towards making Mapusa garbage free. The council has already taken a resolution to outsource waste collection in all 20 wards in the town. The next step is to tender the work and select a good agency which will carry out efficient work of garbage collection. We also need the help of people of Mapusa to contribute to our effort to make the town waste free,” said Vaigankar.
The MMC Chairperson was addressing a gathering during the 61st Goa Liberation Day function at Hutatma Chowk, Mapusa. Several councillors, freedom fighter Jairam Shetye and other dignitaries were also present.
Continuing, Vaigankar said the civic body had almost a year back outsourced waste collection work in wards 1 to 10 and had received good feedback from the residents.
She said the municipality had taken a lot of development works in town in the last 15 months.
“The Rs 5 crore annual grants for 2020-21 has been utilised diligently for development work while works for 2021-22 is presently going on. The estimates for 2022-23 have also been drawn,” she said and added that the works constituted drainage, laying of pavers and road work.
She further informed that construction of a new project near the old municipality site has been tendered and is likely to be taken up soon. Likewise, construction of the administrative block near the municipality is going on and work on the new library will also be taken up, she said.
The chairperson also informed that all hot-mixing of roads will be taken up after the underground power cabling works are completed.
