In order to tackle waste coming from surrounding villages, the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) has resolved to identify waste dumping spots at various entry points in the town.

MMC Chairperson, Rohan Kavlekar informed that the Goa Waste Management Corporation has directed the civic body to identify space of around 150 to 200 sq mts at major entry points of the city so that people from villages who bring waste from homes can dump it at these spots.
The council identified three spots for the moment and is expected to add more spots at a later stage. The three identified spots are near old Asilo Hospital, Ghateshwarnagar in Khorlim and near Hotel Preeti International.
The chairperson further informed the council that the department of fisheries has sanctioned Rs 5 lakh to MMC to carry out renovation work of the fish market.
The city fathers came up with various suggestions to put the funds to good use.
Councillors, Ryan Braganza and Tushar Tople suggested clearing the debris and muck all around the fish market building.
"There are many areas inside the fish market which are dirty and at times even stink. There is need to clean these places," said another councilor, Rajsingh Rane. "More than cleaning we need to focus on providing good sanitation facility in the fish market building," said former chairperson, Sandip Falari.
The chairperson suggested that it would be better to inspect the fish market and then decide what to work on.
In another decision, the council unanimously resolved to outsource garbage collection in Mapusa market to an external agency for a period of one year.
Former chairperson, Sudhir Kandolkar suggested that civic staff which will be free from market waste collection should be accommodated for door-to-door collection in wards.
The council also in principle passed the site plan for new beef and pork stalls building but to carry out necessary changes in the plan.
In another decision, the council decided to favourably consider to hand-over the Ganeshpuri ground to Reliance Foundation, a corporate entity, to conduct a talent search programme in football.
The company wants the ground from August 1 to
September 30.
