Mapusa urban bank claimants call for quick disbursement of deposits

Decrying the slow progress of claims of disbursement, the depositors of Mapusa Urban Cooperative Bank (MUCB) have demanded parallel and simultaneous release of their deposits both below and above Rs 5 lakhs. 

The depositors said that claims of 49.49 percent of depositors below Rs 5 lakh limit were settled so far, while disbursement of claims of Rs 5 lakh and above depositors was yet to commence.

While releasing the quarterly statement ending June 31, 2023, the Director of Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation Mumbai (DICGC-RBI) informed that out of the total of 66,927 depositor claims sanctioned amounting to around Rs 254 crores, below the Rs.5/- lakh limit, claims of 33,124 depositors of total 49.49% depositors were settled amounting to around Rs 249 crores comprising 98.06%.

The Claims of 33,803 depositors comprising 50.51 % of the total sanctioned 66,927 depositors amounting to Rs. 4.93 crores still remain to be settled.

“The depositors having deposits of over Rs 5 lakh and above is amounting to Rs 73.17 crores which has not yet been released to respective depositors,” said Joseph Carneiro, one of the depositors in a signed press note.

He said the DICGC-RBI report states that claims in respect of actual untraceable depositors up to June 31, 2023 amounting to Rs18.32 crores were yet to be settled by the liquidator.

He further said the principal outstanding amounts due to all categories of depositors till date amount to Rs 96.79 crores.
