With the controversy surrounding the new vegetable market refusing to die down, Tuesday saw Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Sandeep Falari lose his cool on a delegation of Mapusa Merchants’ Association.
“You don’t try to take my chair,” Falari shot back at the delegation of Mapusa Merchants’ Association, who tried to place a suggestion before the chairperson to resolve the vegetable market issue.
Mapusa Merchants’ Association President Ashish Shirodkar was trying to explain to the chairperson that if the 14 wholesale vendors were removed from the new market, another 100 vendors could be easily accommodated inside the market.
“I don’t know why he reacted that way. Probably the mess created in the market is haunting him,” Shirodkar said. “Instead of listening to us, the chairperson was blowing his own trumpet and refused to hear us out,” Shirodkar added.
A total of 260 places were assigned inside the new vegetable market, of which 14 were reserved for wholesalers with each one getting an area of 20 sq mts. The remaining 246 places had an area of 3 sq mts for retail vending.
The merchants’ delegation tried to explain to the chairperson the difficulties faced by the local vendors, who failed to get a place inside
the market.
