After missing multiple deadlines, two major infrastructure projects in Mapusa – collectively worth ₹24 crore – are finally nearing completion and are expected to be inaugurated next week, according to local officials.
The projects, undertaken by the Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA), include the construction of a six-floor commercial complex near Alankar Theatre in Angod and the renovation of the old Mapusa municipal building, now transformed into a modern library.
The commercial complex, with an estimated cost of ₹20 crore, was launched in 2019 and was originally scheduled to be completed within 18 months.
However, progress was significantly delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and other logistical setbacks. The building is now complete and is receiving final finishing touches.
Designed for mixed commercial use, the complex features seven shops on the ground floor, 14 on the first floor and office spaces across the remaining floors. The building also includes basement parking for 52 cars.
The second project, valued at ₹3.8 crore, involved the restoration of the historic Mapusa municipal building. The renovation work began in November 2022 and was initially expected to be completed in six months.
Now fully restored, the building has been converted into a state-of-the-art library while retaining its colonial-era architecture.
The refurbished facility includes modern amenities such as a digital library, a dedicated children’s reading area, a career guidance section, and a mini-conference room.
Officials hope the new library will serve as a dynamic hub for learning and community engagement.
Both projects were initially slated for inauguration on April 23 but were postponed due to unforeseen circumstances.
“Both these projects are complete and we are planning to inaugurate them hopefully in the next week,” said Mapusa MLA Joshua D’Souza. Acknowledging the delays, he expressed confidence that the completed facilities will be a source of pride for the residents of Mapusa.
