Marathi lovers protest in Canacona, seek official status to Marathi

Claiming injustice being done to Marathi language, Marathi lovers in Canacona staged a protest at Chaudi-Canacona to demand official language status to Marathi in the State.

The Canacona branch of the Marathi Rajbhasha Nirdhar Samiti held a dharna near the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj statue at the Kadamba Bus-stand complex at Chaudi in Canacona to demand official language recognition to Marathi.

The protest meeting, which was moderated by Hindavi Swaraj Sanghatan, Canacona chief Dilkush Shet, began by garlanding the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

Stating they are Marathi lovers, various speakers, including Shantaji Naik Gaonkar, youth activist Vaibhav Phaldesai, senior Sangh activist Satish Bhat, Bajrang Dal leader Dayanand Phaldesai, Anil Phaldesai, retired teacher Navnath Sawant, Govind Lolyekar, Shabaji Naik, Jyoti Painginkar, and Vinayak Chari said that this is a fight against the injustice being done to Marathi and that they will no longer take it lying down nor back down till the official status is granted to Marathi language.

They further stated that Bhajans, Kirtans, religious rites and rituals in the temple are all conducted in Marathi and it is the government's obligation to grant official status to Marathi language.
