Wholesale fish agents, however, reassured fish loving Goans that fish from the country’s east coast will flood the market after June 15, when the fishing ban is withdrawn along that coast.
The hustle and bustle in the wholesale fish market also went missing on Day One given that many Madgavkars do not consume fish on Thursdays.
While only a couple of outstation truck-laden with fish arrived in the wholesale fish market in the morning, there was practically no fish available in the market brought by the mechanised boat owners today. A boat owner told The Goan that though most of the vessels had returned to the jetties on Wednesday, they had recorded a poor catch. However, sources said that fish netted in the last couple of days may land in the next three days, adding that truck load of mackerels from Andhra Pradesh has headed to the wholesale fish market on Thursday.
President of Goa’s Wholesale Fish Market Association M Ibrahim said that the wholesale fish agents will ensure that there’s no shortage of fish for the Goan people during the ban period. “The fishing ban is set to be lifted along the Eastern coast from June 15. The wholesalers will try and procure fish from the east coast and other centres,” he said.
Replying to a question, Ibrahim said that fish may not have been available in abundance in the wholesale fish market on Day one of the ban on fishing given that it was a Thursday. He, however, hastened to add that fish will be available in the markets at least during the next three days at affordable rates.
