Pre-monsoon showers cause soil erosion; ‘polluted’ creek water invades Colva beach

Day-long incessant pre-monsoon showers and the rough conditions in the sea left behind soil erosion at Colva beach as water from the adjoining creek entered the sea at the beach entrance, even as the beach was invaded by a thick carpet of waste rncomprising of weeds and plastic bottles on Thursday morning.

Water from the contaminated creek gushed out from the water body and emptied into the sea at the mouth, bringing with it pollutants and waste. Locals told The Goan that the soil erosion came to light only on Thursday morning after a day-long heavy pre-monsoon shower.
“Soil erosion is not an unknown phenomenon at Colva beach when the creek water enters the sea and vice versa during the rains. It must have taken place late Wednesday night,” informed a local youngster as he walked through the water way connecting the creek to the sea.
That’s not all. A thick carpet of green waste mixed with bottles covered a large stretch of the Colva beach on Thursday morning. Life guards and locals suspected that the green waste, comprising of weeds, must have been emptied on the beach by the water gushing into the sea from
the creek.
Till 11.30 am on Thursday, there was no agency around to clear the waste, even as tourists and visitors struggled to cross over the carpet of waste and make to the water. “The government agencies ought to have come by now and cleared the beach stretch of the waste. It does not look good when Colva beach is known all over as the tourist destination,” remarked a domestic tourist.
