MARGAO
Margao MLA Digambar Kamat during the weekend made a fervent plea to the businessmen as well as citizens in the commercial capital to clear the tax dues voluntarily, promising that the Margao Municipal body will assist the taxpayers in making payments in instalments.
He further told the Margao civic officials to revert to the old system from the coming financial year, wherein tax bills are raised before the end of the current financial year to facilitate the taxpayers to clear the dues in the first month of the new financial year.
Patting the Margao Municipal recovery team for effecting recovery of Rs 25 lakh in just 12 days, the Margao MLA urged the citizens to clear the tax payments and avoid penalties.
“The recovery drive effected by the Margao Municipal Council is progressing at a smooth pace. They have recovered Rs 25 lakh in 12 days. It is an achievement,” he said, while urging the civic body to continue with the work.
Kamat made an appeal to Madgavkars to cooperate with the MMC recovery teams and pay the tax dues. “Even if they cannot make the full payment, the MMC should accept half payment and the balance within a certain period,” he said.
The Margao MLA warned that the Municipality will be forced to invoke the penalty clause in the Goa Municipalities Act to penalise the habitual tax defaulters.
He also appealed to the major tax defaulters such as banks, and commercial establishments to voluntarily clear the dues and avoid the penalty.
