In a bid to streamline the allotment of stalls at the 7-day Old market feast fair, beginning from June 5, the Margao Municipal Chief Officer Rohit Kadam has constituted an advisory committee to ensure that the fair takes place as per the rule in force.
Councillors and officials, however, have hoped that the Chief Officer’s initiative will plug the leakage of revenue running into lakhs of rupees.
The panel constituted by the Chief Officer comprises of Ward Councillor Francis Joanes, Junior Engineer Rajesh Dessai, sanitary inspector Sanjay Sanguelkar, Market inspector Shekhar Gaonkar and Savio Dias nominated by Ward No one Councillor.
The brief of the Committee, include demarcation and allotment of space to the vendors, enforcing the Market/fair area provision of the Act, the Rules & Bye-laws.
The panel will enforce the condition of permission granted to different vendors intending to do business vide Writ petition no 801 of 2010 Hon'ble High Court of Bombay at Goa. 4. Sanitation & Solid Waste Management facilities.
The Chief officer, however, made it clear that the Committee is only advisory in nature and recommendations are not binding on the Council. The committee will not deal in any of the financial transactions related to the feast.
The Old market feast fair has come under the scanner of citizens given the bitter past incidents when the Civic body had lost revenue running into lakhs of rupees after the MMC bungled over the allotment of stalls, with the officials turning a blind eye to the discrepancies.
