The Margao Municipal Council on Wednesday received around 20 computers to replace the ageing office computers “ thanks to Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA).
The A-Class civic body, however, has a problem at hand “ how to dispose of the dozens of the junk and defunct CPUs, monitors, keyboards and other computer accessories lying in the municipality corridors over the last several months.
While it was initially presumed that the e-waste lying dumped in the municipal corridor adjoining the office of Chairperson Babita Angle Prabhudesai will be disposed of by the GSUDA, this thinking is far from the truth. While GSUDA has provided 20 brand new computers, which are being installed in the various sections by a team of technicians, the civic body has now been told in clear terms to initiate steps to dispose of the e-waste on its own.
An official manning the municipal stores told The Goan that GSUDA has told the civic body that the defunct PCUs and other computer accessories are not required by the agency and hence urged the municipality to take steps to dispose of the e-waste. “The municipality had made a detailed inventory of the defunct computers and the accessories so as to submit the records to the DMA’s office. Now, we have been told that the civic body is free to dispose of the e-waste to agencies involved in the collection and disposal of e-waste,” he added.
The e-waste consisting of defunct CPUs, monitors, key boards and other accessories have been lying dumped in the municipal corridors adjoining the chamber of the Margao Municipal Chairperson. The e-waste which had occupied the space in the corridor had turned an eyesore over the last several months, but no attempt was made for its disposal on the plea that GSUDA officials would verify the same.
The municipal store keeper pointed out that with the GSUDA no longer interested in seeking details of the defunct computers, the municipality will contact the players involved in the collection and disposal of the e-waste.
“The municipality has in its possession a list of such players. We will verify the details before asking them to take
the e-waste,” the store keeper informed.
