Members of the Seraulim village panchayat along with Sarpanch Domingos Fernandes descended on the Sokobandh in the village following complaints that the bandh is being used for storage of scrap and human habitation.
The planned inspection of the entire area, however, could not take place on Wednesday after the owner contended that he has not received the notice of inspection from the panchayat body. Sarpanch Domingos said the panchayat would return back to the site after the party is served a proper notice via registered AD.
Domingos, however, said the panchayat members have come across a number of structures on the bandh, besides people putting up there. “The inspection would reveal whether the structures have come up as per the provisions of law or otherwise,” the Sarpanch said, adding that the panchayat would initiate action against the structures as per law.
The sarpanch, however, reminded that the panchayat had in the past razed down the illegal structures erected on the bandh.
A local resident Patrick Vaz told the media at the site that the waste dumped at the bandh finds its way in the neighbouring paddy fields, causing nuisance and contamination. “My field lies close to the bandh which is playing host to the structures and the waste. The waste is flowing in our fields,” he said, while claiming that migrants are putting up on the bandh.
While demanding an immediate stop to the activities on the bandh, Patrick has urged the panchayat to conduct an inspection at the earliest and initiate action against the structures as per law.
