MARGAO
In a significant development, government’s move to appoint the president of Margao Comunidade bypassing the candidate recommended by the managing committee has triggered opposition amongst the shareholders and components.
In fact, the shareholders at a meeting held on Saturday morning at the Margao Comunidade office have slammed the government for setting a dangerous precedent by rejecting the candidate recommended by the managing committee for the post of president.
Addressing the media after the meeting in the presence of Attorney Celestin Norohna, shareholder Franky Monteiro said the shareholders will immediately write to the government to reconsider and roll back the decision to appoint Patricio Octavian Coutinho as the Margao Comunidade president.
Given the sequence of events, Monteiro recalled that shareholders had elected Savio Corriea and Celestin Norohna as the president and Attorney of Margao Comunidade for the triennium 2025-207 in the elections held in December 2024.
He said issue over the appointment of a new president arose after Savio Correia resigned from the post and the substitute also expressed his unwillingness to take over the reigns. “The Managing committee then recommended the name of Mauvin Cruz to the government for the post of president. However, instead of accepting the recommendation of the managing committee, the government accepted the recommendation made by some shareholders and appointed Patricio as the new president”, he said.
Terming this as a dangerous precedent being set by the government, Monteiro said the managing committee and the shareholders are objecting to Patricio’s appointment for the simple reason that he was not an able component of the Comunidade at the time of elections held in December 2024.
“Our main objection to Patricio’s appointment is two-fold; that he was not an able component at the time of election held in December 2024. Patricio has become a shareholder only in May by purchasing the required number of shares”, he said.
He alleged that Patricio had filed an intervention application before the court in a matter of eviction fixed for judgement. “With the government is trying to bulldoze the Mhaje ghar scheme and the illegal structures at Talsanzor and Moti Dongor coming under the Margao Comunidade, shareholders have demanded to have a president who will protect the interests of the Comunidade body’, he added.
Both Monteiro and Attorney Celestin Norohna have demanded that the government keep the appointment of the new president in abeyance and subsequently appoint Mauvin Cruz as the new president of Margao Comunidade as per the decision of the Managing committee and shareholders.
