MARGAO
On the last day of the current five-year term, Margao Municipal Council Chairperson Pooja Naik worked from her chamber possibly for the last time as she attended to public grievances on Wednesday.
Many a city father was trying to find out whether the Chairperson would continue in office till the elections are held or whether the civic bodies would come under the rule of administrators.
Some of the councillors were frantically trying to figure out with Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes whether the current term of the council has ended on Wednesday and whether any notification has come from the government shedding light on the status of the elected council from today.
The Chairperson of the council had taken charge of office on November 5, 2015, with many in the corridors of the civic body saying that Wednesday is probably the last day of the current council.
The MMC Chairperson said she had no knowledge whether the tenure of the council ends on Wednesday or not. She and the councillors, however, were bracing up to face the reality that their five-year term has come to an end.
MMC CO Agnelo Fernandes also told the councillors that no communique has come to him from the government on the status of the civic body. Sources in the know, however, informed that the government was trying to figure out the number of A grade officials posted in South Goa.
In the meantime, around 20 councillors, cutting across party lines, had a get-together in a city hotel on Wednesday, with their five-year tenure finally coming to an end.
