With the High Court barring open dumping at Sonsodo, a beleaguered Margao Municipal Council is mulling waste segregation right at the black spots and also introduce late night collection of wet waste from the hotels and eateries.
The civic body has also mulled patrolling at the dark spots to challan the vehicles bringing waste into the city from the neighboring villages. With the commercial capital playing host to around 70 black spots across the city, spots which receive waste mostly from the neighbouring villages, the Municipality is bracing up to undertake waste segregation right at these spots before the segregated waste is lifted and transported to the Sonsodo facility.
Presently, the mixed waste from the black spots is lifted by the compactors and dumped at the Sonsodo open dump yard with Fomento insisting only on segregated waste at the treatment plant.
While the MMC braces up to deploy around 25 workers for waste segregation at the
black spots from Saturday itself, the civic body has drawn up plans to increase the workforce to around 40 workers by Monday.
An action plan will be put in place on Saturday as the Chief Officer Sidhivinayak Naik has called a meeting of all engineers, supervisors and workers at the municipal garage to brief them how to go about the job in the wake of the High Court order.
The Chief Officer said workers will be deployed at the black spots to segregate the waste before it is transported to Sonsodo. He said the workers will be also asked to segregate the waste inside the vehicles before the waste reaches Sonsodo.
While open dumping of waste at Sonsodo had come to a halt on December 12, 2012, the day when the Waste treatment facility went into operation, open dumping at the site had returned at the site earlier this year after the May 25 fire incident after Fomento refused to accept mixed waste as the plant had reached a point of saturation.
MMC resolves to pay Fomento only

MARGAO: Ahead of the hearing on Sonsodo before the South Goa district Court on September 30, MMC took a decision on Friday to pay Fomento only Rs 25,000 per week for treating daily waste at the treatment plant as against the Rs 1 lakh paid to the company per day. At an emergency meeting convened by MMC Chairperson Babita Prabhudesai on Friday evening upon the advice of the Municipal lawyer ahead of the court battle, the Council was unanimous on its decision to make a payment of only Rs 25,000 per week to Fomento in lieu of treating the garbage at the waste treatment plant. >> See pg 2
