Margao retail fish market reopens, but very few buyers

Vendors waiting for customers after the SGDPA retail fish market reopened for business.

The SGPDA retail fish market has finally reopened, but there were hardly any customers as well as business for the beleaguered fish vendors.

After the month-long lockdown which left most of the vendors without business, making it difficult for them to make both ends meet, they were expecting customers to come in large numbers, but that was not to be.

While a number of vendors were back on the platforms in the fish market, there was not much business for want of customers. A fish vendor, Fatima, told ‘The Goan’ that they are finally back in the fish market after the lockdown, but they have not seen the customers around.

“Only a few customers visited the market on Wednesday. There was not much business. Let us wait and see”, she said.

Many a vendor echoed her sentiments saying that though they are back in the fish market after a month-long lockdown, they are waiting for the customers to visit the market and buy fish.

While the vendors offered for sale fish such as Pomfret, Sole Fish and other variety of fish, some of the fish vendors pointed out that the non-opening of the SGPDA wholesale fish market has left them with no option but go to other places for their requirement of fish. “Most of our requirements for fish are met from the wholesale fish market. With the wholesale fish market still shut down, we have to go in search of fish at other places”, remarked a fish vendor.
