The Goa police have dispatched teams to Karnataka and Tamil Nadu to nab the undertrial in the British woman rape case, who escaped from police custody on Friday leaving the Goa police red faced.
The men-in-uniform remain clueless on the whereabouts of the undertrial
more than 24 hours after his escape while being brought
to court.
A senior police officer said, “We have alerted all the police stations in Goa. Besides, our teams are heading to Karnataka and Tamil Nadu to trace the accused.”
Meanwhile, women rights activist Auda Viegas has said this is the second time that the accused has escaped from police custody, saying once he had escaped from the custody of North Goa police.
Demanding to know why no permission was obtained from the court to handcuff him, Auda said mere suspension will not make the escort police responsible while on duty.
She said the British consulate has been informed and the victim, who will come to the State for her annual holiday, will initiate legal action.
She recalled that accused Mahanand Naik had also escaped when he was brought to the Mapusa court some years ago, but fortunately the public prevented his escape.
“Very recently, the undertrial in the Betalbatim gang rape Ishwar Makhwana, who is also a known criminal had escaped from police custody when he was brought for treatment,” Auda recalled.
